Experiential learning in the new reality with MEG Hotel’s i-Academy

by Samantha Manuel

Even as we grapple with various challenges brought about by the pandemic, learning and growth have to continue for everyone. This is particularly true for young Filipinos, which include the future generation of achievers in the local hospitality scene.

Megaworld Hotels i-Academy has presented a one-of-a-kind training program for tourism and hospitality students as a way to help them advance their learning. The industry was significantly affected by the pandemic and for the past months, there have been a lot of uncertainties on what the future holds, especially for the next generation of hoteliers.

Megaworld Hotels launched an online contest for budding hoteliers during the i-Academy pilot webinar in June, entitled B.E.A.T. (Balance. Evolve. Adapt. Thrive.) A Pandemic Survival Guide for Tourism and Hospitality students. This gave them a chance to be part of the pioneer batch of the “i-Academy On-the-web Training” program.

A total of 20 deserving students were hand-picked to join the program out of the 165 entries that came from different parts of the Philippines. They all took part in a five-day online course on key topics related to hotel management, which include housekeeping skills, customer service, food and beverage operations, human resource, and sales and marketing, all facilitated by experts from Megaworld Hotels.

The program is being offered in partnership with various educational institutions as a school immersion program for tourism and hospitality courses.

Here’s what students from the first batch of trainees have to say about their experience.

Through i-Academy, OWT (on-the-web training) becomes the new OJT (on-the-job training). Student immersion in the time of social distancing has now become possible with a series of comprehensive online lectures by seasoned hoteliers. The 20 pioneers were able to complete the program with renewed hope of a brighter tomorrow for the industry.

Moving forward, the program will also be launching a series of Webinars for upskilling and e-learning for our partners and associates.

iAcademy aims to promote the resurgence of the Philippines’ tourism and hospitality industry through continued learning in a post-pandemic world.
